Change.org Petition Inspires Victoria’s Secret to Consider Mastectomy Bras

A month ago, Allana Maiden started a petition for a line of Victoria’s Secret mastectomy bras–and it might just change how survivors shop.

Victoria’s Secret has become synonymous with the flirty little somethings countless women slip on to feel sexy. But for the 50,000 American women who undergo mastectomies each year, bra shopping can be a trying chore. Allana Maiden, whose mother is a cancer survivor, is hoping to fix that with a Change.org petition to Victoria’s Secret that quickly went viral.

In the plea that has garnered over 120,000 signatures since January, she writes, “Many women who undergo mastectomy surgery because of breast cancer suffer from body image issues. It doesn’t help that they don’t have the option of buying the pretty bras they wore before their battle with cancer, and specialty stores can be hard to find, forcing them to order bras online that they have to send back because they don’t fit properly.”

And it looks like 27-year-old Maiden’s wish for a line of “Survivor” mastectomy bras may soon be granted. Last week, Fashionista reported that Tammy Roberts Myers, vice president of external communications for Limited Brands (Victoria Secret’s parent company), sat down with the online activist to discuss the project. Maiden and her mother, Debbie Barrett, carried a hard copy of the petition to the meeting in Victoria’s Secret shopping bags.

Though the company is “still looking into the viability of a mastectomy line,” plans are underway for the mother-daughter duo to meet with developers at corporate headquarters in Ohio. According to the Huffington Post, they’ll take a group shopping trip, during which the Victoria’s Secret team will learn what Barrett goes through when searching for a new bra.

“We were just blown away,” Maiden told ABCNews.com of the initial meeting. “They actually want to send us out there and are taking this seriously… I thought it would just be a pat on the back – ‘Good job, we can’t do it.’ It was amazing. I do think that [Victoria's Secret] is interested in figuring out how to do this.”

We hope that breast cancer survivors will find mastectomy bras on this mega-retailer’s shelves in the near future. Until then, you can lend your voice to the worthy cause by clicking here.
